I met Ashley about three weeks ago at Evander’s matric farewell and I was just dumbstruck at how beautiful her dress was. Later that evening I invited her to do a photo shoot with me…with that specific dress. When I made the shoot arrangements with Ashley’s mom, Linda, it came out that Ashley herself designed the dress and that Linda actually made the dress.
That just gave me more motivation to do this Cherish-the-dress photo shoot. At the end of the shoot we Trashed-the-dress.
I decided to make full use of this opportunity to hone my photographic skills by experimenting with techniques that I have not yet perfected. At an actual wedding it is too risky for me to use an unproven technique. So…for me this was play time! Some of the things I experimented with were: Studio flash on location, colored gels, Infra red photography, Tilt & Shift lens, ring light and video light.
As usual, Wayne was my trusted assistant during the shoot. Linda gave emotional support to Ashley…not that she really needed it. Ronel was our hair- and makeup artist. A big thank you to Umuzi Lodge for letting me use their facilities.

Yes, The IR images are quite different and a bit tricky to get right, but I’ll be doing more of them in the future.
